Great news! The U.S. is finally getting a wonderful treatment option that Canadians and Europeans have been embracing for years. It’s called Juvederm Volbella, and it’s used to diminish the fine lines and wrinkles that surround your mouth. It can also tackle wrinkles around the nose and even increase lip fullness. The FDA gave its approval for Juvederm Volbella, which is an offshoot of the original Juvederm cosmetic filler, in June 2016. Though it’s a new product, we think you’ll appreciate the subtle changes that our Juvederm Volbella injections will deliver. Still, we realize you may have questions, and Lasky Aesthetics is here to help.

Juvederm Volbella FAQ

How Does Juvederm Volbella Work?

Volbella is a gel that contains hyaluronic acid, which adds volume to your lips and fills fine lines and wrinkles. The hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, giving your mouth added contouring and definition.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance made naturally by the body, though production slows as you age. This moisturizing sugar gives your face and lips a youthful, plump appearance. Cosmetic companies produce hyaluronic acid synthetically and blend it with a gel for use as a facial filler.

Have Tests Been Done on Volbella?

Researchers have completed a number of clinical trials to determine the safety and efficacy of Juvederm Volbella injections. One study featured 139 subjects where researchers tested the product’s effectiveness on lines and lip fullness. According to the report, about two-thirds of the study's participants saw positive results. The FDA approved Volbella in the summer of 2016 after tests showed that the filler was safe for use in most healthy adults over the age of 21.

Is a Juvederm Volbella Treatment Painful?

Volbella contains 0.3 percent lidocaine, which lessens the pain at the injection site. Your medical aesthetic specialist will use a fine gauge syringe to administer the treatment, and Volbella's smooth consistency makes injecting it easy and effortless, decreasing any discomfort during this procedure. If you’re more comfortable adding an additional topical numbing via ice or topical anesthetic, we can discuss this during your consultation.

Will My Volbella Treatment Cause Swelling?

As with all injectables, you may experience minor swelling and slight redness post-injection. Some bruising may also develop at the injection site. These side effects, if present at all, should last less than a week. You can cover skin discolorations with makeup as soon as 12 hours after the procedure. We recommend Oxygenetix as it’s breathable, allowing your skin to heal while keeping the area covered.

When Can I Return to My Everyday Activities?

You can go back to your everyday life right after a Volbella treatment, though you shouldn’t participate in any intense activity or drink alcohol for 24 hours post-injection. You should also avoid excessive heat like the kind you would experience in a sauna. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun through shade and sunscreen following a Volbella treatment as well.

How is Juvederm Volbella Different from Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus?

While Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are all hyaluronic acid-based gels, Juvederm Volbella is formulated with Vycross technology, which makes its consistency softer and smoother. The difference between the three products comes down to cross-linking, which is the process of chemically binding the hyaluronic acid’s individual chains to transform them into a gel that offers lasting results. With cross-linking, the makers of Juvederm’s cosmetic fillers were able to change each product’s consistency to deliver treatments that are more specialized.

What Makes Juvederm Volbella Different from Other Lip Fillers Like Restylane Silk?

Both fillers give you fuller-looking lips and decrease the appearance of fine lines around your mouth. However, Volbella lasts longer than other lip fillers like Restylane Silk. Volbella’s effects are noticeable for as long as a year, while Silk’s last about six months. Juvederm Volbella is one of the best options when it comes to adding volume to lips. Silk works better for smoothing out lips and fine lines.

What Should I Expect During My Volbella Consultation in Beverly Hills?

An aesthetic injection specialist will assess your medical history and skin health. They will ask about your expectations during your consultation and evaluate your facial aging to determine which product is right for you and how much you’ll require to achieve your desired results. The details of the treatment will be fully explained to you before your practitioner offers advice regarding the best treatment option for your particular skin issues. your medical aesthetic specialist will make sure you know what to expect from the treatment, how long the procedure will take and how long the effects of Volbella will last.

How is Volbella Administered?

Your aesthetic injection specialist will clean your face before administering Volbella. He or she will then mark the injection points and use an extremely small needle to inject the Volbella into the treatment areas. Each injection will only take a few seconds to complete. Since Volbella also contains lidocaine, the substance will numb the areas it encounters as it moves through your skin. Administering Volbella requires special training, so be sure to choose a practice with experienced specialists.

Will I Receive Anesthesia Prior to Juvederm Volbella?

You can request a topical anesthetic to decrease the discomfort of the Juvederm Volbella procedure. Once the cream is applied, it will need to remain on your skin for 30 to 40 minutes before you receive the injection. Along with decreasing your discomfort, the cream may also help prevent bruising. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen before your injection since these medications can cause additional bruising or increase bleeding. Instead, discuss other pain-relieving options with your medical aesthetic specialist beforehand.

What Should I Expect After My Lip Treatment with Juvederm Volbella?

You’ll notice an immediate difference as the gel makes your skin look smoother. Juvederm Volbella works by attracting some of your body’s natural moisture to the injection site, which can cause swelling. This is a side effect you should expect to occur. Juvederm has often been shown to cause a little less swelling than other fillers. Your lips may initially appear overly puffy, but initial swelling with subside after a day or two, and your final results will be fully noticeable after about one week. If you have a major social event coming up, be sure to give your body enough time to heal from the injection. After about a week, you will return to our practice for a follow-up appointment to ensure your results are as expected and, if necessary, additional filler may be added to improve your results.

What are the Potential Side-Effects of Volbella?

You can use a small ice pack following the treatment if you experience discomfort. Even though it may feel good, avoid massaging the lip area as it will cause the filler to move around. If needed, you may apply a lip moisturizer. Irritation or redness may occur around the injection sites. This can be hidden through makeup. These side effects should disappear in just three to four days.

As with any procedure, your cosmetic aesthetic specialist will discuss its possible side effects with you. Be sure to follow our post-treatment instructions carefully.
