The Obagi Blue Peel is a quick, relatively simple, in-office procedure designed to improve both the appearance and health of the skin. By mixing a low concentration of TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) in a blue solution, thin layers of damaged or aged skin can be removed from the face or body.

The Obagi Blue Peel represents a significant breakthrough in skin rejuvenation procedures, as it enables your skin care expert to administer your treatment in a highly customized manner not possible with other chemical peels.

Blue Peel Uses for Better Skin

This skin treatment has a variety of aesthetic purposes. Some of these include the eradication of acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, pigmentation issues, and aging and sagging skin. An Obagi Blue Peel can be applied to the chest, neck, hands, back, arms, and legs, as well as the face.

Real Patient Testimonials & Results

Obagi Blue Peel reviews are mainly positive. Patients that had the Obagi Blue Peel for acne and the Obagi Blue Peel for pitted acne scars were delighted with the procedure. In general, most people report a dramatic improvement in their complexions within the first two weeks after treatment. Those who followed the pre-procedure protocol and aftercare instructions were especially happy with their results and would undergo the procedure again.

Many patient reviews of the Obagi Blue Peel are available on the Internet. See what the peel can do in our video below:

Blue Peel Ingredients

The Obagi Blue Peel ingredients are 15 to 30 percent TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) delivered in a patented blue carrier pigment.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

After you are made comfortable, your skin will be thoroughly prepped and cleansed by your skin care expert. Any pain relief, if indicated, will be administered. Then, one to four coats of the Obagi Blue solution will be applied to the treatment area. As we've established, the number of coats will depend on your skin's condition and your particular aesthetic goals.

During the procedure, you may experience a mild burning sensation. Fans can relieve this discomfort, and are available for your use during the procedure if needed. The entire process usually takes 20-45 minutes. Immediately post-treatment, your skin will retain a bluish tint, but this should wash off within 24-48 hours.

Personalized Pre-Procedure Consultation

Every successful cosmetic procedure begins with a carefully-crafted plan. During your pre-procedure consultation, your skin care expert will take a detailed medical history and perform a careful examination of your skin. You will also be asked many questions about your current lifestyle and your aesthetic goals that have led you to seek treatment.

After your assessment, you and your skin care expert will devise a plan specifically created for your needs. The process will be explained to you in great detail, and the number of coats and treatments you require will be discussed.

Any possible Obagi Blue Peel side effects will be discussed, such as tightness, redness and excessive peeling. Serious side effects are rare.

During your consultation, you will also be given a personalized 6-12 week course of Obagi Nu-Derm creams to prepare your skin for your upcoming treatment.

Common Questions / Blue Peel FAQ

How does it work?

The active ingredient in Obagi Blue Peel is TCA (Trichloracetic Acid), which is used in different proportions according to your own unique needs. The Blue Peel application allows your practitioner to safely and effectively remove the damaged surface layers of skin from your face or other parts of your body.

These dead skin cells are replaced by new, healthy ones, giving your complexion renewed clarity and elasticity.

How is it administered?

Obagi Blue Peel treatments can be given at 8-week intervals until the desired effect is achieved. For most patients, 1-2 peels are sufficient. Once the hoped-for level of correction is reached, maintenance treatments are recommended to ensure long-term Obagi Blue Peel benefits.

Who is a candidate?

A wide spectrum of people can benefit from this chemical peel. Those who are in good health, over 18, and would like to address any of these common problems are all potential candidates for Obagi Blue Peel:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Scarring
  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Sun spots
  • Acne
  • Skin laxity

If you've tried everything in the drugstore and department store to improve or camouflage your complexion to no avail, you could be a perfect fit for this aesthetic treatment.

Can you use Obagi Blue Peel for dark skin?

Yes. This cosmetic treatment is perfect for darker complexions, but performing an Obagi Blue Peel on African American skin or an Obagi Blue Peel for Asian skin takes a little extra care and know-how. Our team of highly-skilled skin care experts is trained to help you achieve whatever cosmetic goals you may have, so you can feel confident that your skin's characteristics are taken into consideration.

This includes the Obagi Blue Peel for melasma, those bothersome brown, tan, or bluish patches of facial skin. This chemical peel is highly effective in eradicating these stubborn and distressing marks.

As long as you carefully follow all pre-procedure and aftercare instructions, you should be putting your best face forward in no time!

Is Obagi Blue Peel painful?

Pain obviously means different things to different people. In general, the deeper the peel, the greater the chance you'll feel some discomfort. But most patients report only a mild burning or stinging sensation associated with the procedure. A fan blowing on the area being treated provides relief for many patients.

Can anesthesia be used?

In many cases, this cosmetic procedure doesn't require any sedation. If you have any concerns about pain relief, don't hesitate to discuss the issue with your skin care expert during your pre-procedure consultation. Your comfort and peace of mind during your treatment play a large part in ensuring its success.

How long does the procedure take?

The typical Obagi Blue Peel treatment takes about 20-45 minutes, depending on the number of coats deemed necessary for optimum results.

How long does it last?

The corrective effects of an Obagi Blue Peel are permanent but, unfortunately, cannot stop time. Therefore, after your first peel you may require another to achieve your desired level of rejuvenation. If you follow your prescribed skincare regimen, a maintenance treatment every 6-12 months can keep your skin fresh and glowing.

What does an Obagi Blue Peel cost?

The price of an Obagi Blue Peel application can vary widely. The depth of the peel, the concentration of the TCA, the size of the area being treated, and the number of treatments a patient requires all come into to play. Considering the dramatic, positive improvements, the majority of patients consider the Obagi blue peel worth it.

When will i see results?

Immediately after your peel, you may experience mild swelling. Within 2 or 3 days, your skin will begin to peel and will continue to do so for roughly 7 to 10 days. Once the peeling has stopped, the dramatic results of your treatment will immediately become apparent.

The appearance of your skin will steadily improve over the next 4-6 weeks, gradually becoming firmer, smoother, and more youthful looking.

Who shouldn't get this treatment?

Those with active cold sores, or who have open scrapes or cuts in the treatment area should not undergo Obagi Blue Peel treatment. If you have a sunburn or very sensitive skin this procedure is contraindicated. Patients who have used Accutane within the past 6-12 months are not candidates for this peel, nor are people who are allergic to aspirin. Those who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for the Blue Peel.

What are the potential complications?

Once again, the deeper the peel and the darker your skin, the higher your risk for complications from an Obagi Blue Peel.

The most common side effects include:

  • Swelling
  • Hyper-pigmentation
  • Skin infections
  • Keloid scars
  • Acne flare-ups
Most of these problems can be avoided by strict patient compliance to the pre- and post-procedure skin care regimen.

Obagi Blue Peel Down Time: How long is it?

Obagi Blue Peel healing time is more about aesthetics than pain management. Your skin will have a blue tint for a few days. You may experience some swelling, tingling and itching. And there will be a whole lot of peeling going on.

  • Obagi Blue Peel Day 2: You will look like a Smurf, and the peeling commences.
  • Day 3: Still a bit blue, and peeling.
  • Day 4: Blue fading away, still peeling.
  • Day 5: ...and peeling.

Do NOT pick at your skin! It's vitally important that you allow it to slough off at its own pace. All this peeling is good! Your new skin is getting ready to make its debut.

Allow at least a week for Obagi Blue Peel downtime. You will be rewarded with smooth, radiant, youthful looking skin about two weeks post-procedure. So worth it!

Your Obagi Blue Peel aftercare will be dependent on the type of treatment you have had. The deeper the peel, the more involved your skin care regimen will be - and the greater your risk for complications. But if you rigorously follow your post-treatment care instructions, your recovery should be uneventful.

I went to see Dianne regarding dark pigmentation I had on my face due to sun worshiping when I was younger. Dianne began to treat me with the Clear & Brilliant laser and I began to see the difference. She performed 4 treatments and with each my skin was brighter. However due to my olive skin, some pores were still visible. Dianne then recommended a Blue Peel. This was magical, the results were simply fantastic. What I love about Dianne is the fact that she is goes a little at a time to see how your skin reacts. She only recommends treatments that are a bit more aggressive after other treatments stop to produce the results. I love her gentle hands and the way she cares about her clients. I feel so fortunate that I found Dianne; I trust her; she doesn’t sell treatments, she recommends the ones that are right for you." - GM
