With so many options available for facial rejuvenation, deciding what the best cosmetic procedure is for your situation can be confusing. If you’re wondering what the pros and cons of BOTOX vs. fillers are, here’s a look at what they do and what you need to know before considering either treatment. BOTOX and fillers have very different yet complementary roles to play. Put simply, BOTOX reduces wrinkles by relaxing the muscles, and fillers add volume to the skin, which also smooths out wrinkles while adding youthful fullness to the face. These treatments can be used alone, but are often used together for a more youthful look through a treatment we refer to as a non-surgical facelift or liquid facelift.
The injectable treatment BOTOX is the best choice to address the lines and folds caused by facial expressions called dynamic wrinkles. BOTOX is used to temporarily block the signals from the nerves to the muscles. This reduces movement in the affected area, smoothing the skin and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Smoothing out forehead lines is typically a job for BOTOX. Forehead lines are also dynamic wrinkles that are usually only visible when your facial muscles are in motion. Since BOTOX works by relaxing muscle action at the site of the injection, this makes it the perfect injectable treatment to use to temporarily smooth out forehead lines while also preventing them from becoming deeper and more noticeable.
The “11”s between your brows, or the vertical lines that appear when you frown (also called frown lines), are another prime example of dynamic wrinkles. This is another scenario where BOTOX is the perfect solution. Generally, BOTOX is appropriate for the upper third of the face including the forehead, crow’s feet, and lines between the brows.
Fillers are also an injectable anti-aging treatment; however, instead of impeding muscle movement, they act by replacing lost volume and plumping up the skin by replenishing natural hyaluronic acid and collagen lost to the ravages of time. This reduces static wrinkles that are visible even when you’re at rest while also restoring youthful fullness in the cheeks and lips. A common misconception is that BOTOX is used for lips, but this is not the case. Very specific formulated fillers are used for lip enhancement, such as Restylane Silk and Juvederm.
Under eye lines are static wrinkles that develop due to the effects of gravity and loss of volume. Cosmetic fillers are a good choice to correct this problem. Fillers are also an effective treatment for other static wrinkles in the lower third of the face, such as the nasolabial folds and the lines that form around the mouth, often called smoker’s lines.
In many cases, both BOTOX and fillers will provide the best aesthetic results. What would be the case for you?
