Dermal Fillers: The Ultimate Guide to Anti-Aging Fillers

If you're looking for safe, effective, non-invasive ways to minimize or eliminate lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging, or you want to add some volume to your face or plump your lips you're in luck. These days, there are more FDA-approved anti-aging fillers available than ever. Here at Lasky Aesthetics and Laser Center in Beverly Hills, we offer the most popular types of dermal fillers, and our experienced team can help you determine the option that addresses your concerns the most effectively. Still, like anyone who wants to reduce the signs of aging, you want to be informed. By familiarizing yourself with the most popular types of dermal fillers and understanding which ones are best suited for particular concerns, you can more easily pinpoint one that's right for you. To help you, we've broken down the anti-aging fillers that are offered at our practice.

Belotero Balance

Best for: smile lines, vertical lip lines, nasolabial folds, chin wrinkles and under eye

Belotero Balance is an anti-aging filler that is made of hyaluronic acid. As you will see as you read through this overview, hyaluronic acid is featured in many of today's most popular types of dermal fillers. The hyaluronic acid that's used in Belotero Balance is produced using Cohesive Polydensified Matrix, or CPM, which creates a smooth, flexible gel that blends easily into skin tissue and doesn't affect your ability to make facial expressions. Therefore, the results are incredibly natural, and they wipe several years away in an instant.

Our aesthetic injection specialists use ultra-fine needles to inject Belotero Balance into predetermined areas. Results are immediate, and they typically last around six months. Virtually anyone is a candidate for this procedure, except for those who have severe allergies in general or who are allergic to gram-positive bacterial proteins.

Best for: nasolabial folds, crow's feet, lip shaping and contouring, facial contouring

Approved by the FDA, Juvederm is one of the most popular types of dermal fillers available today. Its primary active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, and it is available in a variety of formulas and strengths depending on what you are targeting. Hylacross biotechnology is used to produce this anti-aging filler, and the procedure typically takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

If you are concerned about nasolabial folds, marionette lines or other telltale signs of aging, Juvederm may be the answer. Its results are immediate, and they last up to one year. The gel-like substance is eventually reabsorbed by the body, and it is completely safe, so there's no need to worry. This procedure is safe for just about anyone except for those with severe allergies, allergies to gram-positive bacteria, and those who are undergoing immunosuppressive therapies.

Juvederm Voluma

Best for: cheek enhancement

eye rejuvenation treatment

As we age, crucial components of the skin like collagen and elastin begin to degrade. In turn, cheeks may become sunken and hollow looking. Enter Juvederm Voluma, which is especially designed to add fullness and plumpness to the cheeks.

The main ingredient of Juvederm Voluma is hyaluronic acid, but lidocaine is also included to ensure your comfort. Our skilled aesthetic injection specialists use ultra-fine needles to gently inject this gel-like dermal filler into the cheeks to restore fullness. At the same time, the procedure may produce a non-surgical lower face-lift by gently lifting sagging jowls and other loose skin.

Juvederm Voluma is approved by the FDA, which is great news for anyone who is eager to enhance the appearance of their cheeks. Sunken cheeks tend to age people before their time, and this phenomenon typically occurs as a natural part of the aging process. Luckily, there's no need to resign yourself to sunken, hollow-looking cheeks. With a brief visit to undergo this simple procedure, you will regain the youthful cheeks that you once had.

Best for: wrinkle reduction; hands, cheeks

Unlike the preceding anti-aging dermal fillers, Radiesse works by actively stimulating the production of collagen, which tends to decline as we age. Adding collagen to the skin helps to make it firmer and gives it a more defined structure. Its primary active ingredient is calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA, microspheres, which are suspended in an aqueous gel solution.

The procedure takes less than an hour in most cases. Results are immediate, and they tend to intensify even more over time. Incredibly, the results of Radiesse can last anywhere from one to three years, making this a very effective--and cost-effective--option.

Our aesthetic injection specialists use ultra-fine needles to inject Radiesse under the dermal layer of the skin. Because the needles are so fine and our specialists are so skilled, discomfort is minimal. However, some people prefer to have a topical anesthetic applied prior to the procedure.

Best for: fine lines around the mouth and nose; nasolabial folds; jowls; recessive chin; bags under the eyes; and sunken cheeks

eye rejuvenation treatment

This highly effective anti-aging filler contains two types of hyaluronic acid. One type is similar to what's found naturally in the body, and the other--non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, or NASHA--is a type of clear gel. It is administered using a very fine needle, and local anesthetic is typically applied to ensure comfort. The procedure usually takes only 30 minutes or less, and most people come in for follow-up consultations in 6 to 12 months.

Restylane improves lines and wrinkles by up to 80 percent, and it is very safe. This procedure is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing or for those with skin infections or with weakened immune systems.

Restylane Lyft

Best for: cheek enhancement; cheek augmentation; smile lines; temples; jawline; hollow cheeks

Like our most popular types of dermal fillers, Restylane Lyft's primary active ingredient is hyaluronic acid. Lidocaine is also often added to the formula to ensure comfort throughout the procedure, which is already quite comfortable in general because we use ultra-fine needles to administer it.

This filler is injected into the subcutaneous layer of the skin, which is deeper than most anti-aging fillers. Because it is made out of larger particles, it provides an instant lift. Results last 12 to 18 months, so you don't have to worry about coming back again for a long time.

This FDA-approved dermal filler is the replacement for Perlane, and it is every bit as effective. For all intents and purposes, the change just reflects a new name.

Restylane Silk

Best for: lip augmentation

eye rejuvenation treatment

If you are concerned about thin lips, or if you are developing wrinkles that radiate from your lips, Restylane Silk may be right for you. This FDA-approved anti-aging filler is less viscous than other types, which allows it to flow more easily. A small amount of lidocaine is included in the formula, whose primary active ingredient is hyaluronic acid. It has been shown to reduce wrinkles by up to 80 percent.

The procedure typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Results are immediate, and they last anywhere from three to six months. The amount of time that the results last depends on a variety of factors, including how frequently you speak or otherwise move your mouth.

Restylane Silk is not recommended for people who have severe allergic reactions or bleeding problems. Otherwise, it is a very safe and effective way to rejuvenate the lips.

Best for: nasolabial folds, marionette lines, sunken scars

Unlike the other anti-aging dermal fillers listed above, Sculptra works by promoting the production of collagen. Its primary active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid, or PLA, which is derived from lactic acid. Lactic acid is prized for its ability to boost cellular metabolism.

Another thing to keep in mind about this option is that its results are not immediate. Instead, they gradually develop over a period of several weeks. However, the wait is worth it as it is highly effective and lasts an average of two years.

Most people undergo two to three treatments every 6 to 10 weeks for optimal results. However, your treatment will be customized by the staff at Lasky Aesthetics to suit your exact needs.

How to Choose the Right Dermal Filler

Now that you have a basic understanding of the most popular dermal fillers, which are all offered here at Lasky Aesthetics and Laser Center in Beverly Hills, you may already know which one looks the most promising. Remember, most of these are designed to address lines, folds and wrinkles on the skin of the face. Some, like Juvederm Voluma, are great for cheek enhancement and augmentation. Others, like Restylane Silk, are intended for lip augmentation.

Most include various formulations of hyaluronic acid, and many include small amounts of lidocaine for comfort. As you have seen above, some include PLA or CaHA.

New protocols for office visits View Update

New protocols for office visits

May 12th, 2020

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic we have instituted many changes to your normal office visit. These changes have been introduced to protect everyone’s health and safety during your visit. All of our staff have been tested for COVID-19 and are negative. They are being monitored daily as well and will be practicing safety guidelines.

  1. If you are sick, do not come to the office. Call our front desk and we will reschedule your appointment promptly once you’re healthy again.
  2. Please wear a mask to your appointment.
  3. Do not bring someone else with you to your appointment. They will not be able to enter the office and wait for you. The only exceptions are for those who require medical assistance or translation assistance. Additionally, please do not bring any pets to the office with you.
  4. The day before your appointment, as in the past, you will be called to confirm your appointment. During that call you will be asked if you have any symptoms like fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste. You will also be asked if you have been recently exposed to COVID-19 or have been traveling on a commercial airplane within the last 2 weeks.
  5. When you arrive for your appointment, please call the office from your car. A staff member will either tell you to come up to the office at that time or will ask you to wait in your car until they text you to come up. Before entering the front door of the office, you will be met by a staff member who will take your temperature with a no-touch forehead thermometer to be sure you don’t have a fever. They will again ask you if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. You will be given a mask if you don’t have one, as well as hand sanitizer since you touched the doorknob to enter the office. We will stagger appointments so that on the day of your treatment, you will not interact with any other patients.
  6. You will be taken directly to an exam room which has been cleaned and disinfected just prior to your arrival. There are also air filtration machines installed in each exam room which sterilize the air.
  7. Our medical assistants, who will be wearing N95 masks and protective eye shields, will take your history and prepare you for your visit. You will be asked to sign a new COVID-19 consent form in addition to any of the usual consent forms you may be used to.
  8. After your treatment, you will check out while in the exam room and any products you purchase will be brought to you. If you give us your credit card information the day before your appointment, we can handle the checkout without physically touching your card.
  9. Please try to make your follow up appointments during your office visit. With new scheduling changes and staggered appointments, last minute appointments may be difficult to schedule.
