A healthy dose of skepticism is warranted, especially when claims appear to be too good to be true. In America, we have a long history of snake oil salesmen with slick pitches about products that don’t work. This is still an issue, particularly with many over-the-counter beauty products promising to erase skin imperfections. Naturally, we’ve become accustomed to responding to any claims with a very forceful, “Yeah, right.” So when patients ask us, “Does CoolSculpting work?” we aren’t surprised. After all, a non-surgical procedure that promises fat loss virtually anywhere on the body is an incredible claim.
CoolSculpting is FDA-approved to reduce unwanted fat almost anywhere on the body. FDA-approval came for each treatment area after clinical trials conducted by plastic surgeons and dermatologists showed that fat reduction occurred safely for the patients in their clinical studies.
To really understand how it’s possible that a non-surgical procedure can remove fat, you must understand the science behind it.
When we exercise, we say that we’re “burning fat.” When we diet and workout, we talk about how the “fat is melting” away. This idea of heat destroying fat makes it difficult to process the idea that cold can also affect and destroy fat. After all, the colder it gets, the more our body’s need insulation to keep us warm, right? Not exactly.
General outside cold isn’t going to kill fat cells. However, targeted and controlled cooling for a specific amount of time freezes fat cells in a process called cryolipolysis. The temperature is strictly regulated by the CoolSculpting device, which freezes and destroys targeted fat cells without affecting the surrounding tissue. Skin is left unharmed (no, you won’t get frostbite), and the underlying tissue is also unaffected.
After freezing, the frozen fat cells will break apart and die. After this process, the fat will then be flushed naturally through your lymphatic system. A lymphatic massage, such as with our Ballancer Pro system, and drinking plenty of water, will help improve your results.
No. Nothing works for everyone. Just like a specific diet or medication works for one person and doesn’t do anything for another person, not everyone’s body fat will respond to CoolSculpting’s fat freezing technology the same way.
Furthermore, some patients aren’t good candidates for CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting, in addition to liposuction, isn’t a weight loss solution. All fat reduction procedures, surgical and non-surgical, require a patient to be a healthy weight. CoolSculpting, just like liposuction and other non-surgical fat reduction procedures, are for targeted fat loss only. So if you’re a healthy weight, maintain a good diet and exercise regimen, but you just can’t shake a stubborn pocket of fat on your body, CoolSculpting could be the right solution for your needs.
CoolSculpting also isn’t generally used for large areas of fat reduction. In these cases, liposuction may be the preferred option. If this is the case, we’ll discuss this during your CoolSculpting consultation and refer you to our plastic surgeon Dr. Leslie Stevens.
Additionally, some patients won’t be able to safely receive CoolSculpting. While it is a non-surgical procedure, it is still a medical procedure that affects your body in many ways. For some people who are taking certain types of medications or have certain medical conditions, CoolSculpting may not be safe for you. We will make this determination during your consultation. If you aren’t sure if CoolSculpting will be safe for you, give us a call and we’ll discuss your individual needs and concerns.
Both men and women can safely and effectively have CoolSculpting for fat reduction. Results will vary from person to person for a variety of reasons, however. The number of treatments required to reduce fat will also vary.
CoolSculpting was originally approved to reduce fat on the upper and lower abdominals and flanks (love handles). If you have pockets of fat in these areas, CoolSculpting can reduce it.
The upper arms are one of the most recent FDA-approved applications for CoolSculpting. If you have upper arm fat, CoolSculpting can help freeze it away. This doesn’t apply to loose skin, however, If you have skin that is loose and hangs, but there’s no fat there, we have skin tightening treatments that can help.
Thigh-area CoolSculpting is a common request from our female patients. Inner and outer thighs can be reduced using CoolSculpting fat freezing. If you desire a thigh gap or don’t like the collection of fat that gives you that “wide-hipped” appearance, then CoolSculpting can reduce these pockets of fat.
CoolSculpting is also great on the back of the legs, just beneath the buttocks. Known as the banana roll, reducing fat in this area can also help your derriere appear more pronounced without a butt lift or enhancement.
Back and bra fat can be reduced using CoolSculpting. We’ve seen great results in our own practice using CoolSculpting in this area. This is great for patients who wish to look better in swimsuits or backless tops and dresses.
No. CoolSculpting is not a solution for cellulite reduction. Instead, consider Cellutone for non-surgical cellulite reduction. Cellutone can also be used to enhance your CoolSculpting results! When applied to the skin, Cellutone breaks up pockets under the skin that cause cellulite, but it can also help break up the frozen fat cells faster, speeding up your results.
If you’ve heard stories about how CoolSculpting didn’t work or gave bad results, consider that the problem may lie with the provider and not the procedure. Providers with poor training or experience may use the device improperly and ineffectively. That’s why it’s very important to choose a practice with highly-experienced providers in a reputable practice.
At Lasky Aesthetics, our providers are nurse practitioners and physician assistants who have the training, experience, and expertise necessary to administer CoolSculpting with the best possible outcomes. Furthermore, our providers have the medical qualifications to assess patients prior to treatments to ensure a safe procedure and good results.
In addition to offering CoolSculpting treatments in a safe environment in the capable hands of our experienced providers, we also offer DualSculpting, which cuts your treatment times in half! We are able to use two CoolSculpting machines to provide you with faster results and no downtime. Contact us for a consultation today to find out if CoolSculpting is right for you.
