A smooth, elegant neck presents a refined appearance, one that makes you appear more youthful and fit. Sometimes, however, genetics have a different plan for us, and we inherit stubborn fat that accumulates beneath the chin. Treatments like double chin liposuction can address this stubborn diet- and exercise-resistant fat, but if surgery doesn’t appeal to you, then non-surgical alternatives are available in our Beverly Hills medical spa. Let’s compare double chin liposuction with non-surgical treatments we offer here at Lasky Aesthetics & Laser Center: CoolSculpting & Kybella.
Double chin liposuction removes excess subcutaneous fat virtually anywhere on the body, revealing a smoother, more contoured appearance. Even if you don’t choose to make any other changes to your face, reducing stubborn fat beneath the chin can make a significant difference to your profile, making you look younger and slimmer.
The pros of double chin liposuction are that it's generally considered a safe plastic surgery procedure that will physically remove fat cells from beneath the chin all at once. Double chin liposuction requires only one procedure with follow-up appointments to make sure the patient is healing well and is happy with the results.
There are downsides to double chin liposuction, however. Many people prefer to avoid surgery due to the downtime, swelling, and bruising associated with the procedure; the bruising and swelling can last up to three weeks. For many patients, this isn’t appealing. Furthermore, not everyone is a good candidate for elective surgery.
During double chin liposuction, you'll likely have local anesthesia to numb the area; some patients may have general anesthesia, but this is rare. Once you’re numb from the anesthetic, your plastic surgeon will make a small incision for access to the chin fat. Your surgeon will then insert a suctioning wand called a cannula into the incision to break up the fat cells and remove them.
With liposuction, you probably won’t have to stay in the hospital, but you will experience bruising and swelling for 2-3 weeks following the procedure. To prevent an infection from developing, you may need to take antibiotics. You will be instructed to avoid aspirin and other blood thinning NSAIDS, as they increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Most people are able to return to work and regular activities about two weeks following the surgery.
If surgical liposuction isn’t appealing or you aren’t a good candidate for elective surgery, you may consider new non-surgical treatments for double chin reduction in Los Angeles. Common and popular non-surgical alternatives to double chin liposuction include FDA-approved CoolSculpting and Kybella. These both involve distinct procedures that can target and eliminate excess fat beneath the chin in different ways.
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that involves freezing excess fat below your chin. The freezing process is precisely cooled to a temperature that eliminates fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. CoolSculpting is a safe procedure, one that can be done with precision by a licensed nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Anesthesia is not necessary and no incisions or needles are used.
The pros of CoolSculpting are that the process is straightforward, and there are very few potential side effects. Your treatment can be performed during your lunch break. You can catch up on emails, watch television, read a book, or even take a nap. The primary downside of CoolSculpting is that it usually takes two or more treatments to achieve your goals; fat reduction occurs over time as the fat cells die off and get flushed through the system.
A CoolSculpting treatment will be on the chilly side. Controlled cooling, known as cryolipolysis, will be applied to targeted body parts. It may feel intensely cold at first, but this usually passes within 10 minutes because the area will become numb. Relax and watch Netflix on the television in your treatment room or catch up with friends on social media.
You may see changes to your double chin just three weeks after a CoolSculpting treatment. In two months, you will see the most dramatic results. Your body will continue to get rid of frozen fat cells for as long as four to six months following your treatment. Depending on your goals, you may be able to have a second treatment to reduce the fat even further.
Kybella is another cosmetic treatment option that you can receive to reduce submental fullness without double chin liposuction surgery. Kybella is a prescription injectable solution that uses deoxycholic acid to melt fat cells, allowing your body to flush them out naturally. It was the first FDA-approved non-surgical treatment for double chin reduction.
Your Kybella treatment begins with a paper grid affixed to the treatment area; this transfers the injection sites from the paper to the double chin where Kybella is to be injected. Following a series of lidocaine injections to numb the treatment area, your provider will administer the Kybella injections. A series of injections is performed during each treatment session to best target all of the stubborn fat cells.
Following your Kybella treatment, we will instruct you to apply ice to reduce swelling. The fat cells will die off over time. To see full results, patients require an average of 6 treatment sessions. Once the treatment destroys the fat in the cells, the cells will not be able to store or collect additional fat. After the cosmetic treatment gives you the look that you want, additional treatments are not needed.
The choice between CoolSculpting and Kybella often boils down to which procedure will give you the best results, as determined by your provider. However, some patients benefit from a combination of both treatments. All things being equal, many patients choose CoolSculpting over Kybella as it requires fewer appointments for treatment. Results vary from patient to patient, and your needs and goals will determine which treatment we recommend for you.
