As stand-alone treatments, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Sculptra, and Ultherapy are all indispensable aesthetic treatments we offer at our our patients amazing anti-aging results. When all three are used in conjunction, they are a powerhouse of facial rejuvenation that combine to correct skin discoloration, sagging skin and lost facial volume, all of which are common signs of aging. We are proud to have talented medical professionals on staff with the experience, expertise, and certifications required to execute this more involved combination of aesthetic procedures in our Beverly Hills Medical Spa, the Lasky Aesthetics and Laser Center.
To begin, let’s explore what each individual treatment brings to the table. They all serve important, but very different, functions in providing clinically proven results.
Intense Pulsed Light treatment, or photorejuvenation, is a non-invasive method to correct many cosmetic issues. The procedure entails the use of an intense beam of light to hone in on the deepest layer of skin (the dermis). This evens out skin tone caused by sun damage, hormones, chronic skin conditions or other factors that create a blotchy, uneven appearance to the skin.
IPL Photofacial treatments improve signs of aging on the face, neck, arms, chest, and hands in several ways. In addition to addressing sun damage or age spots, it’s also an excellent option for reducing the appearance of redness, rosacea, and the broken blood vessels often referred to as “spider veins.” Photorejuvenation has also been proven effective to help control flushing and to diminish the look of acne scars or large pores.
Issues IPL can be used to treat include:
After receiving special goggles or eye pads for protection during the procedure, a cool gel is applied to the treatment area. The smooth glass surface of the IPL device is placed directly on the area needing correction. Next, calibrated lightwaves adjusted to your particular needs are emitted by the handpiece. The instrument is passed over the treatment area in brief, even passes.
Those with sun-damaged or discolored skin are perfect candidates for an IPL photofacial. People who want to diminish the appearance of large pores, freckles, or spider veins can also benefit from this procedure. Just about anyone in good health who wants to revitalize their complexion could be a good fit for IPL treatment.
No. At most, patients liken the sensation to a light pinch or the snap of a rubber band.
Although most patients report no discomfort, we realize pain is a subjective experience. An anesthetic cream is available upon request. We want your experience to be relaxing and stress-free from beginning to end.
In general, an IPL procedure takes 30-45 minutes, depending on the area being treated and the amount of correction required.
Discernable results may take days to become apparent, depending on what area(s) you are having corrected. A series of 3-5 treatments administered every 3-6 weeks is the typical course to achieve optimum results.
It’s important for any laser skin resurfacing treatment to pre-treat your skin by being on a good skincare regime which includes a lightening agent. This helps to control your cell turnover and will improve the outcome of your treatment. In addition, wearing sunscreen to ensure the results of your IPL skin treatment last as long as possible is also recommended. Immediately after your procedure, protect your skin from the sun by covering the treated area and wearing the SPF recommended for you by your licensed medical aesthetics provider.
Once you have completed your initial treatment regimen, 1-2 maintenance sessions annually are usually sufficient to keep your desired results as long as you are following the instructions by our providers to prevent further skin damage.
An Intense Pulsed Light cosmetic treatment is so safe and speedy that it’s called a “lunchtime procedure.” Patients may return to their normal routine as soon as their IPL procedure is completed.
Sculptra received full FDA approval in 2009, although it’s been a popular treatment in Europe since 1999. Sculptra’s main ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) which has been used for decades to produce bone plates and absorbable sutures for medical applications.
Since PLA is derived from lactic acid, a collagen-producing substance the human body manufactures naturally, Sculptra aesthetic is a remarkably safe approach to facial rejuvenation that restores facial volume while also diminishing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles.
Sculptra Aesthetic is used to replenish lost facial volume by improving the foundation of your skin. As part of the aging process, the collagen in your skin breaks down, resulting in lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Sculptra encourages your body to produce new collagen that gradually smoothes the skin’s surface. Sculptra provides natural, long-lasting results that improve over time.
Some of the issues this treatment is used to correct include:
Immediately before your procedure, your Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will assess and mark the exact points of injection. If indicated, a topical anesthetic can be administered. The Sculptra suspension can also be diluted with lidocaine to relieve discomfort.
The filler is injected via tiny needles under the skin, rather than into the skin like other injectables. Right after treatment, your provider will gently massage the area to ensure even distribution of the Sculptra suspension.
Since Sculptra is biologically inert, most people who are in good health and aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients of this treatment are good candidates for this procedure. If you want a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance without looking like you’ve had “work” done, Sculptra could be a perfect fit for you.
Some patients report mild discomfort while others report no pain whatsoever.
If you are concerned about experiencing discomfort during your Sculptra treatment, a topical anesthetic is available. Ask your aesthetic medical provider if your Sculptra suspension will contain lidocaine. We want your treatment to be pain – and anxiety – free.
The entire process usually takes less than an hour.
Sculptra is not instant gratification. The full effects can take weeks, or even months, to manifest. Your facial rejuvenation is a gradual, natural process as your body begins to produce more collagen. This ensures that the results are longer lasting; the gradual change also ensures that people can’t tell you’ve had anything done.
Here’s the reward for your patience. The results can last up to two years, although yearly maintenance treatments are usually recommended. As your provider for details regarding your personal expectations.
Patients can return to their normal activities immediately post-procedure. Strenuous exercise and aspirin should be avoided for a couple of days, as these can increase bleeding and bruising risks. Avoid alcoholic beverages as well.
Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound energy to lift and tone loose or sagging skin. It penetrates deep below the skin’s surface to stimulate new collagen production. Since Ultherapy ultrasound technology works non-invasively from the inside-out, the treatment’s effects are cumulative. Results gradually appear over 2-3 months, and improvement is often noted for up to six months after treatment.
Ultherapy is used to tone, lift and tighten loose, lax skin. It’s a non-invasive method to erase the ravages of gravity, time, and sun damage without the risks or downtime associated with facial plastic surgery.
Some of the areas this procedure can be used to correct include:
Your Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will first apply gel to the area requiring correction and then place the ultrasound wand on your skin. This wand will project an image of your deep skin tissues on a screen to act as a guide. The ultrasound device works by emitting tiny, intermittent bursts of heat that stimulate the deepest supporting layer of skin, called the dermis, to produce collagen. Depending on the area(s) being treated, an Ultherapy procedure takes 30-90 minutes to complete.
Anyone who wants to combat the effects of gravity, Father Time, and maybe too many hours on the beach, is a good candidate for this non-surgical alternative to facelift and neck lift surgery. Those with mild-to-moderate skin laxity are a great fit for Ultherapy. It’s also a perfect solution for those who don’t want, or can’t have, more invasive procedures.
Some patients report minimal discomfort, but only during the procedure itself. Steps are taken to ensure your comfort during treatment.
If you are concerned about pain relief, please discuss this during your pre-procedure consultation with your provider. At Lasky Aesthetics, we know your peace of mind is crucial for a successful outcome.
Depending on the area(s) being corrected, Ultherapy generally takes 30-90 minutes.
Although some initial improvement may be noted in the first few weeks after the procedure, the full effects won’t become evident for 2-3 months. This is when your collagen production goes into full swing.
Results from Ultherapy typically last a year. Touch-up treatments are needed to keep pace with the aging process. The recommended frequency varies from patient to patient and depends upon adherence to post-procedure instructions from your provider.
Ultherapy requires minimal downtime, although many will return to their regular activities right after their appointment.
Research and testing has shown that an IPL, Sculptra, and Ultherapy combination treatment administered at the same time is both safe and effective. This means with one visit you can achieve tighter, smoother, more radiant skin without additional risks or side-effects.
Intense Pulsed Light works perfectly with both Sculptra and Ultherapy. The regenerating action of IPL doesn’t penetrate deep enough to interfere with the Sculptra injections or the Ultherapy ultrasound treatment, (which both work from the inner layer of the skin outward.) So all three can perform to their optimum benefit, and you get a much more comprehensive level of rejuvenation.
Altogether, you have IPL for rejuvenation, Sculptra for volume, and Ultherapy for lift - all in one neat little package. You get almost all the aesthetic benefits of a surgical procedure without the surgery. You’ve got to love that!
