Ever since Kim Kardashian was filmed getting her PRP microneedling treatment, patients all over Los Angeles have asked about this revolutionary facial treatment. But just because a procedure is trendy doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Is microneedling is the best treatment option for your skin care needs? If so, what can you expect? Here are some answers to common questions about our new microneedling treatment at Lasky Aesthetics and Laser Center in Beverly Hills.
Microneedling works by creating tiny "micro injuries" to the skin. These micro injuries penetrate through the upper and middle layers of your skin in order to trigger your body's natural healing processes. When this happens, your body floods the areas with nutrient-rich collagen and elastin while increasing the rate of skin cell turnover.A microneedling treatment can help:
Most often, a microneedling treatment is performed on the face, hands, neck, and chest, but it can be done on virtually any part of the body. The beauty of the procedure is that it can be used on your entire face or on just a few trouble areas. It's even safe to use around your delicate eye and lip areas.
There are three main ways to receive a microneedling treatment.
The first is the standard procedure detailed above. The second way is microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). For this, a small quantity of blood is drawn from your arm. We then separate the blood cells from the plasma and use this plasma alongside your microneedling treatment to amplify its effects. Your plasma is rich with stem cells and growth factors, so it provides an added boost to your body's collagen-building response.
The third variation is radiofrequency microneedling. With this, you are getting the benefits of a microneedling treatment and skin tightening benefits of radiofrequency technology. We combine these technologies in our Voluderm treatment here at Lasky Aesthetics and Laser Center.
Before your procedure, the treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed, and a topical numbing gel will be applied. After this, a hydrating serum will be smoothed over the area, and the microneedling pen will be passed over your skin by a medical aesthetic specialist while you relax. Alternatively, a nutrient-rich topical treatment or your PRP may be applied to the skin prior to the SkinPen application.
Generally speaking, the treatment takes less than an hour and is virtually pain-free.
A microneedling pen is able to give you a much deeper level of rejuvenation compared to using a microneedling roller at home. In addition, a home roller device cannot give you a treatment that is calibrated specifically to your skin. This could mean diminished results or no improvements at all. Furthermore, microneedling treatment pens like SkinPen create smooth, precise micro injuries that go straight into the skin, while a roller is less precise.
Due to the superficial nature of the treatment, there is no required downtime. You will be free to resume your normal activities, and your provider will let you know if there are any products you should avoid while your skin is healing. Generally speaking, however, we recommend that you wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight. Your skin is very sensitive after a microneedling treatment, so take care to prevent sun damage.
While there is no downtime, you can expect to experience facial redness and some peeling following your microneedling treatment.
With so many different treatment options for the same skin concerns, it can be difficult to know which treatments are right for your needs. Would an IPL photofacial be a better solution than a microneedling treatment for you?
An intense pulsed light, or IPL, photofacial works by applying brief flashes of broad-spectrum light to the treatment areas, which allows the heat to penetrate into the deeper layers of your skin. This stimulates your body's natural healing processes, similarly to a microneedling treatment, but it can treat a few skin concerns more effectively than microneedling.IPL photofacials are best for treating:
Overall, one is not necessarily better than the other. When you come in for your consultation, our staff will help determine which treatment will give you the best results.
Laser skin treatments are a great way to restore a youthful glow to your complexion. Laser resurfacing works by removing the outermost layer of skin to reveal fresh, healthy skin cells underneath. Depending on the severity of your skin condition, we may recommend a laser procedure instead of a microneedling treatment, as it will provide you with better results. However, if your skin’s condition isn’t severe or you’re working toward prevention, microneedling is an excellent treatment option. Only a consultation with an experienced skin care provider can determine which treatments are right for you.
Disturbing the pigmentation of darker skin tones is often a major concern when considering cosmetic procedures. Fortunately, many advances have been made that ensure these types of procedures are safe for even the darkest skin tones.
All three types of microneedling have been deemed suitable for dark skin tones, but of course, your provider will address any pigmentation concerns you may have during your initial consultation.
Our providers are experts in administering treatments for dark skin tones, including laser skin treatments. So if you have darker skin, don’t worry; schedule a consultation at Lasky Aesthetics.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment, so there are very few side effects. You may experience residual irritation or mild discomfort immediately following the procedure, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few hours. Skin redness and peeling are the most common side effects and are perfectly normal and expected.
A topical numbing gel will be applied prior to your microneedling treatment. However, treatment can be administered without the numbing cream. It all depends on your comfort level and ability to receive topical anesthetics. If you are allergic to lidocaine, please inform our providers prior to treatment.
